Steak Pie (Aunt Melba's)

Ingredients

1 & 1/2 lbs round steak cut into cubes
1/3 cup flour
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
dash of garlic powder or onion powder
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup chopped onions
1 quart water
1 & 1/2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 cup potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes
(I usually add a cup of mushrooms but the original recipe doesn't call for them) Steph

Golden Pastry Crust-
3/4 cup flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons shortening
1 egg beaten
(maybe 1 teaspoon of water)

Instructions

Mix the flour, salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder. Dredge round steak pieces in the flour mixture. In a heated frying pan, brown the meat in 1/3 cup hot oil. Remove meat from frying pan. In the same pan saute the chopped onions until clear (can do mushrooms at the same time.) In a large pan put the browned meat, sauteed onions and add 1 quart water plus the Worcestershire sauce. Add any of the remaining flour mixture that was used to dredge the meat. Cook and simmer for approx 1 hour, then add the peeled, chopped potatoes and cook an additional 10 minutes. Pour everything into a baking dish (9x13) and cover with pastry. Bake 400 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

Golden Pastry instructions:
Mix the flour, salt and shortening. Cutting in the shortening until it's the constancy of corn meal. To that add 1 beaten egg. Now the original recipe doesn't call for water but my mom says sometimes she has to add about a teaspoon or so. My mom (Carol Borge) doubles this recipe because she likes more crust.
