Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich
Let's start with the beef! Traditionally, a Philly Cheesesteak is made with thinly sliced ribeye. Ribeye steaks tend to be a bit pricey. Chris recommended skirt steak which is more reasonable priced, but since my grocery store didn't have it, I went with top sirloin.
A cheesesteak is a long, crusty roll filled with thinly sliced sautéed rib-eye beef and melted cheese. Generally, the cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz, but American and mild or sharp provolone are common substitutions. ... Other toppings may include fried onions, sautéed mushrooms, ketchup and hot or sweet peppers.
Ingredients
Hero rollSliced steak
Sliced cheese
1 onion
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. Olive Oil
1/2 green pepper, diced
Black pepper
Instructions
Saute one chopped sweet onion in olive oil, 2 tbsp. of butter and crushed, black pepper. Cook in a large pan on high heat until the onions caramelize.Add the slices of beef one at a time into the pan. Use a spatula to cut the beef into small pieces as it cooks.
Add another dash of black pepper and the green peppers. Work the steak into smaller bits and cook until fully done and mixed well with the onions and peppers.
Lower the heat to medium. Use the spatula to form the meat into a long mound. Place 1 or 2 slices of cheese over the still cooking meat. When the cheese starts to melt, use the spatula to lift the meat out of the pan and place it a hero or hoagie roll.
